Turkey Day in Lima

Well, another holiday has come and gone here in Lima. Obviously, Peruvians don’t celebrate this American holiday. So, while you in the states were trying to make your way through crowded grocery stores with piles of humongous turkeys and can after can of slimy cranberry sauce, we were intrepidly trying to find things like cream of tarter and corn starch amongst the usual throng of Peruvians that had no idea what a special time of year it is for us. Fortunately for us, with no Peruvian holidays between now and Christmas, it has been full-on Christmas season since even before Halloween. We saw Christmas decorations in stores in September!

We started off the day with the first annual Carrerita Pavita aka Little Turkey Trot. We all met up at a local park with a running track and everybody ran, jogged, walked and/or meandered, depending on personal preference.  Well, almost all of us, Mark couldn’t make it for the “race” this year… next time!

Almost like home. Almost.

Anyways, Peruvians traditionally eat turkey for Christmas so Justin was able to find one with out too much trouble (be sure and check out his pics) and they’ve been eating sweet potatoes in Peru since long before the Gringos came and made a mess of things. Some things had to be shipped down though… they haven’t yet discovered the wonders of brown sugar here… or those little crunchy onion things that go on green bean casserole… yum. But, between it scavenging the grocery stores and breaking out the spanish dictionaries and awesome care packages for the states, we managed to have every single tasty Thanksgiving dish we could have dreamed of.

We all got together at the Thompsons house for our feast and even were able to watch some Aggie football projected like a big screen on the wall… fantastic! Well, besides the whole losing part. Anyways! We also had the special treat of being joined by John Marks dad, Kelly “Papa K” Davidson who also brought along some wonderful gifts for us all and cards and letters from our loved ones and supporters back home.  Thanks so much everyone!

The kids, blowing our minds by acting like this while we ate dessert and watched football well after their bedtimes

Our kids were about as well behaved as a whole heard of 1, 2, 3 and 4 year olds could possibly be.  Seriously, we put on a movie in another room  but at first they weren’t that interested… and after a while one of the adults went in and found them sitting silently like this all by themselves… a for real deal miracle.

We had an amazing Thanksgiving away from our much loved and much missed families back in the US of A.
